Before the upcoming Minifestival we are glad to meet and prepare together!
As usually – it’s a never ending, capturing and inspiring investigation of contact improvisation with a cozy international group in Vilnius!
The Principles of Contact improvisation (CI) – the conditions for structure, force, depth and evolution
workshop with Julija Melnik, founder and one of the teachers of Vilnius CI & Performance Minifestival
2018 September 14-16, Vilnius, Lithuania
The workshop is designed for all levels of experience in CI. The aim – to prepare or to strengthen foundations in CI, that will allow to enter into a mutually satisfying dance duet, depending on the level of each dancer and their relation quality.
Contact improvisation can become an ,,Art of Staying Connected”, that allows to maintain the contact in the dance with another, the continuity, fluidity and harmony of the movement with others. It is a wonderful instrument to experience what happens at the moment of contact, to approach the reality through touch and to engage into the path towards joy and freedom!
This movement-dance requires not only the physical technique, but also training of attention and cultivation of quality relationship with others. It’s a great way to see, expand and transcend our own limits.
I will be very happy to meet and investigate the dance with those, who want to enter into contact with themselves and the others through conscious movement and touch.
Contact improvisation is one of the most welcoming and friendly dance forms. It’s open for people of all body types, ages, backgrounds and athletic ability.
In contact improvisation two moving bodies are following physical point of contact and they roll, fall, fly, support and give weight to each other. They are sharing the dance and playing with the physical laws as gravity, momentum, inertia, etc.
This workshop will help to release excess muscular tension, get in contact with our bodies and liberate the natural movement.
During the workshop we will work on:
– relaxing the body and releasing unnecessary muscular tension;
– physical touch and point of contact,
– listening to the partner, following and leading,
– sharing the weight
– different ways to support/lift,
– soft landing, falling and rolling,
– moving efficiently in different levels,
– inner and shared balance.
Along with technical practice, while learning we will also focus on our personal curiosity, exploration and pleasure of dance. We will create an atmosphere for finding the trust in ourselves and our partners, spontaneity, support and presence.
Besides CI, we will prepare our bodies and minds with meditation in stillness and movement through Samara Yoga and some energizing exercises, we will deepen body-movement comprehension and relaxation through “bodywork”, as well as composition skills through improvisation and performance scores/structures.
Participation doesn’t need any special previous skills.
People with previous CI experience will also get a lot!
Julija Melnik (Vilnius-Berlin-Alsace) – Master of Science in Education with 13 years experience in dance pedagogy (from hip-hop dance to Argentine tango, from improvisation to sacred dances of the dervishes), teacher of Samara Yoga, instructor of Choreographic Samadeva and constellator by method of Idris Lahore. Since 2006 she has been developing and teaching contact improvisation (IC) in Baltic and in many other countries, including teaching at various CI festivals and other related conferences or events.
She also explores other forms of improvisation and performance, and her search for movement is also informed by practices of meditation, bodywork, euphonic touch, dance therapy, Gurdjieff dances, Lou Yong Tao Tö Qi and other psycho-corporal techniques such as the Feldenkrais method.
Julija studied contact improvisation with CI pioneers – Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith, as well as Nina Martin, Andrew Harwood, Angela Donii, Joerg Hassman, Charlie Morrissey, Adrian Russi and many others. Improvisation and performances she also studied with Julyen Hamilton, Daniel Lepkoff, Nita Little, Alexander Girshon, Keith Hennessy, David Zombrano and others.
Her teaching of CI includes projects with various educational and artistic institutions in Lithuania and abroad, as well as the Lithuanian Association of the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Julija is an euphonist or well-being coach, helping to liberate and harmonize more subtle movements – of energy, emotions, thoughts.
