The Principles of Contact improvisation – the conditions for structure, force, depth and evolution
workshop with Julija Melnik
2019 September 20 – 22 Liepaja, Latvia
The workshop is designed for all levels of experience in contact improvisation (CI).
The aim – to prepare or to strengthen foundations in CI, that will allow to enter into a mutually satisfying dance duet, depending on the level of each dancer and their relation quality.
Contact improvisation can become an Art of Staying Connected or a Dance Meditation, that allows to maintain the contact in the dance with another, the continuity, fluidity and harmony of the movement with others. It is a wonderful instrument to experience what happens at the moment of contact, to approach the reality through touch and to engage into the path towards joy and freedom!
This movement-dance requires not only the physical technique, but also training of attention and cultivation of quality relationship with others. Contact improvisation is a great way to see, expand and transcend our own limits.
It is a practical workshop that engages curiosity and personal research through some theory and technical elements embodied in direct experience. Participants will learn to release excess muscular tension, get in contact with their bodies and liberate the natural movement. As well as:
– relax the body and release unnecessary muscular tension,
– be present at physical touch and point of contact,
– listen to the partner, follow and lead,
– different ways to support and to lift,
– soft landing, falling and rolling,
– moving efficiently in different levels,
– inner and shared balance.
Besides CI, we will prepare our bodies and minds with meditation in stillness and in the movement through Samara Yoga and some energizing exercises, We will deepen body-movement comprehension and relaxation through “bodywork”, as well as composition skills through improvisation and performance scores.
